unable to connect or uninstall or update

I get the SSL connect error and cannot connect. To fix it I decided I needed to uninstall my current version and re-install the most recent version. However, both the uninstall and the install programs failed. I still have my original installation from September, 2013 (I can't find the version number, but the install program was 35MB). The program works fine offline, even after the uninstall failure. The new install program is 142MB and fails to launch. I do not use a proxie. I have 64 bit Win7. Any suggestions?
