What's the deal with "retiring" achievements? Retiring the categories of Debugger and Consultant is effectively saying "we no longer care for your input, so now we're going to shut you up".

A brilliant means of driving away players, don't you think?

Gee, Really, that's what it means? It couldn't POSSIBLY because of this update here http://fold.it/portal/node/995497 , which is a direct result of these sorts of posts here? http://fold.it/portal/node/995408 . These are clearly retired because the forum software no longer knows when bugs are actually fixed, or just closed.

Should they drop everything to integrate the two systems? Does katfish need to spend her morning every day checking for closed bugs and manually incrementing player counters?

In short, this was a SELF-INFLICTED injury by the players...live with it. Or apologize so that things can go back the way they were? Like THAT'LL happen.

Yes, Boots, I am speaking for myself here. But this is exactly the crap that drove me to go solo. I feel strongly about it.

? Ah not really sure what you two are talking about here and how the two things relate to each other.Boots, Madde and Brow are respected folders so please lets get it sorted.

*Sigh*

You both have entirely good points. And Spmm, I hope I can help straighten things out.

Boots, yes, that is a good point. Not having the achievements updated does seem to say something about "not caring" about feedback. Brow, I thought it was manual, didn't realize that's how it was done. I do agree with your point that it could get a bit nasty and that we kind of bring that on ourselves. Though people (players or devs) may not have realized that was an issue. I didn't realize myself that that is why my achievements weren't updating (though I didn't know how it was done). If they have an internal issue tracker, it should probably be done from there. Or, they just have a button for themselves on each case to add a +1 to a user... Could get nasty though.

I think the devs might not have realized this was happening-how about we listen to their input, perhaps once they know they will have a fix?

Do people actually LOOK AT their Achievements and get excited about them? I'm not even sure where to find them, they are just not important.

Scores, on the other hand, ARE important, and why most people play.

Very good point. Personally, I do enjoy them, but as you said, not important, and it may be because I'm a over-motivated kid. :)

A few wires may have gotten crossed here. None of us wants to send the message that player input is not appreciated or valuable because that is certainly not the case at all. The goof up is in the messaging around this, which is entirely my fault.

The changes to the feedback system scrambled up the way we're able to keep track of the criteria for those achievements. I'm sure you guys noticed how quirky they were in the past. Now they are even more so, hence why they were retired. We have been exploring alternative means of rewarding you all for your contributions, (such as forum badges) but have yet to fully flesh out all of the possibilities. And for the record, I'm open to ideas.

I realize not everyone cares about achievements, but there are still many who do and I want to be respectful of their motivations as well. Changes need to be made, it's just a matter of figuring out where.

There is one thing that is particularly important to me. I want to make clear that this is 100% my issue and not due to any player or past event.

Well, we could just go and reset them all then go and re-distribute manually, but that would take quite the effort! The best think I can think of is a flag saying that the feedback was used, but that would take a lot of effort to go through... I hope someone else can think of a better idea.

Asdawnbreaks please remember that you are speaking to a group of adults.

Yes, sorry. :$ I'm just trying to throw out my thoughts as best I can...

As I was trying to get to, my idea would be rather painful, but it's the only thing I see. If it were up to me, I'd go through and do it myself, but it's not really that much of an option. As I said, if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Boots - I do recall saying that in the case of a flood of new players we did tend to get a quite astonishing number of 'suggestions' and 'improvements' to the feedback. Perhaps to get some kind of achievement.
Somewhat different to the experience of a builder folder. [insert better description]

Some discussion was had on the topic and perhaps the realisation of this overload at a time of a large ingress of new players is constraining to exposing fold.it to a new audience.

On a different track in the same space we in Oz and most places west of us are usually a calendar day ahead of Seattle and this can be a cause of aggravation and misunderstanding.

Feedback has seemed more peaceful and constructive since the changes were made.
I think the old way pit players against each other,
with players closing each other's Feedbacks for example,
a role that seems better left to the Foldit team
(the folks with the little green and white ribbon icons by their names).

What is interesting is that the retired achievements are still there. Only with the label "retired", but still there.
