We have some really confused new players in Global tonight who have done one tutorial and been dumped into Platypus venom.

We had a newcomer in global tonight

That was put into the Platy puzzle after completing one tutorial. Here is one comment from that user: "what does it mean to wiggle the side chains?" At least this one asked (and some others have) but it would be extremely discouraging for newcomers.

It says "You have completed all of the intro puzzles!" after ONE intro puzzle.

Yes this is still going on; Heyxx was dumped into the Science puzzles and he had not even played Lonely Sheets. This is a very bad bug! and need addresses fast.

This bug was not so much that players could play science puzzles after few tutorials, but that the "Next Puzzle" button after completing a tutorial would take players to the science puzzles too early. Players could always access science puzzles before completing tutorials if they wanted. The "Next Puzzle" button seems to be working correctly now.

Extract of a conversation with a new player in QTTN

m :do you need help?
p: im new at this
m :follow the instructions, reset and redo
m : help in th wiki
(I see he is in qttn)
m : have you done alll 32 tutorials?
p : ok, thx...I have a general idea, and I have been following tutorials...
p : only 4 so far
p : do all of them, one explain this type of puzzle
p : ok
p: where are they?
m : menu/ puzzle menu/ main menu/ intro puzzles
p : thank you...i'll go there now.

Perhaps, it is not a bug, but it is a major problem.

Since this feedback has been through a couple iterations, just wanted to clarify what's happening this time.

Are new players being pushed into the science puzzles automatically, or are they just choosing to go into science puzzles after completing just a few intro puzzles instead of clicking 'next puzzle' to continue with the tutorials?

If it's the latter, we can look into encouraging them to complete intro puzzles more. If it's the former, then we will figure out the bug that's pushing them into science puzzles automatically.

It's the latter. I think new players should at least have to complete half of the intro puzzles before being able to choose a science puzzle, otherwise they'll get lost and discouraged.
For some puzzle types you could even make it mandatory to complete a certain intro puzzle before one can play them. (For example level 5-3 for Electron Density puzzles)

If a player do a few tutorials and quit, he will return in foldit in science puzzles and not in the first tutorial not made as it should be.

I don't think the client should automatically dump the player into the first un-finished tutorial. There are those of us who have done the tutorials *many* times, and don't want to have to exit the tutorials *again* because the latest installation of the client doesn't recognize that we have finished all the tutorials.

It should always drop the user into the selection menu - Intro Puzzles, Science Puzzles and Contests. It could be argued that Contests needs to be removed from the menu. Likewise, Intro Puzzles could be renamed Tutorials since it is most often referred to by that name.

Ah, yes. That would probably do it. The fix will probably be something like this:

* If you have never completed any tutorial levels, you are brought into tutorial 1-1 immediately

* If you return and have not completed all tutorial levels, you are brought into the tutorial list
-- Unless you have gone to the science puzzles manually. In this case, we assume you intentionally want to skip tutorials (or have completed them offline, or on another account) and you will be brought to the normal puzzle selection dialog after logging in.

See post #14 above

How do you recognize that a user has competed all the Intro Puzzles - I always get the notice that I should continue in the Intros. I thought completion of the Intro Puzzles was only recorded on the local machine, hence always getting prompted to do them again if you re-install or move to another machine.
