Can't send screenshot to chat

This problem seems to be a setting on my new-ish laptop, as I can send screenshots from my netbook. I have searched the wiki and feedback and haven't found a solution so far.

When I try to send a screenshot, I get the clock, then this error:

"Error: failed to open/read local data from file/application: Error contacting server."

I am running Win 7 as an admin in main.

It is fresh install or you have copied your installation?
Try download and install fresh copy in c:/games/foldit or something similar (not in "program files").
Also to send screens your chat have to work, so if you have another copy running somewhere you can not send pics, chat or download recipes.

It's a fresh install from 1 December, in C:/foldit, and I am having the problem while using the chat.

Both my laptop and desktop use to be able to send screenshots, but since updating both to windows 8, I can't anymore.

It says it has saved an image to the desktop of the user that installed foldit, which is different from the user I'm currently using to run foldit.

However I can't find the image, even after logging in as the user whose desktop it said it saved it to.

Once logging in as that user who installed the game, I can then save screenshots, and can also share screenshots.

If you edit your options.txt you can modify "gui/image_dir" to point to wherever you want images saved.

im also having the same trouble/error as alwen. win7 and its been this way since i've installed foldit.

Just in case anyone else is having this problem:

In Options.txt, both
gui/file_dir
and
gui/image_dir

were directories that didn't exist. (For example, "C:\\Users\\WrongName\\Documents" instead of "C:\\Users\\Alwen\\Documents")

I had to close the client, change them to real directory names, then re-open it, otherwise the change was not taking.

Hi lilbit. Are you experiencing exactly the same issue as alwen described in the original post? I'd be curious to know if you're encountering the same error message, too. Thanks!

Yes, it's the same issue and the same message. I edited the options.txt and it didn't seem to help either. I reinstalled the client from a fresh download and the issue persists.

Hiya Katfish and Alwen

I got it working! So, the gui/file_dir and gui/image_dir had extra slashes after a fresh install. (For example: C:\\Users\\NAME\\Documents) When I removed the extras and reopened the client, it would then change those two file locations to C:UsersNAMEDocuments. I closed it again, added in slashes in the appropriate locations (So... C:\Users\NAME\Documents) and it seems to have fixed it right up. No idea why, and no idea if it'll change it again, but it's working for the moment so am not complaining. Thanks :)
