We have a new group member that is being kicked from chat all the time. Could someone please determine why this is happening.

[17:13] * WidgetOtaku was kicked by ChanServ(services@fold.it) Reason (You are not permittedto be on this channel.)

You've probably been around the block a few times but just to be sure:

Have you unbanned him/her since the first time he/she has been banned?

Have you tried changing their channel level?

Have you queried Chanserv for the channel's access list?

(Sorry, don't remember the syntax, IRC is so 2000's)

Thanks brow42 for the information. I don't know IRC so the links were very helpful. WidgetOtaku is on the access list. I assume he/she is getting kicked from the foldit chat client. I'll send a message to verify my assumption.

Our new player is not using an external IRC chat program and is chatting only using the foldit client. I've never seen WidgetOtaku join successfully to our chat room but I do see that id in the global chat.

Paul, as op you can list all the bans on a channel by typing /mode +b
Try then to unban the banned ones using not the nickname but the exact copy of the full path of the ban.
Maybe this will help.

/mode #chan +b should be the command.

You've probably already tried this...

But if you have them go to "My Page" > Edit Settings > IRC (on the right) > check box for Fix IRC Group Chat Permissions > click Save...

That may fix the problem.

Thanks all for the suggestions. We recently tried the "Fix IRC Group Chat Permission" but that hasn't fixed the problem either. We haven't had problems like this with any other players that I know of.

The player's id is on the access list.
[08:06] -> *chanserv* access #GoScience List Widget*
[08:06] --ChanServ-- Access list for #GoScience:
[08:06] --ChanServ-- Level Nickname
[08:06] --ChanServ-- 30 WidgetOtaku
[08:06] --ChanServ-- End of list; 1/1 matches shown.

Just to cover all the bases, he's using the built-in client chat? Most bans happen when people use external IRC. The identify command must be sent before entering the group chat. The game client does this, but people have to do it manually or program their irc client to do this.

Also, check the ban list again. Bans accept wildcards, which can match nick, real name (which is generally hidden but exists, who knows whats in that field), resolved IP names, or numeric ips. It's not hard for an overly general ban to ban everybody in New Jersey, for example.

I have yet another suggestion of the cause (spaces considered harmfull)
Maybe when adding the person to the group a space has become part of the name or any other invisible character. Try removing and re-adding the person to the group.

Thanks for the added suggestions. The player (WidgetOtaku) is only using the foldit client and is not using an external IRC program. I cleared the ban on that name many times and I haven't found any automatic bans although I'm not experienced in IRC. I'll see if I can get the player to re-join the group and see if that helps.

If you changed your password, try use the old one with different irc-client.

kxu,
I've tried to enter our group chat using WidgetOtaku's id and IRC key and I still can't get in. When you say password, do you mean the Foldit client password or the IRC key. When I try using an external IRC client with the IRC key that she has given me, I get [12:16] --NickServ-- Password incorrect.

I mean the irc-key. The error log indicate WidgetOtaku ( or you ) is/was keep
trying to use incorrect password ( irc-key ). did WidgetOtaku change the
foldit password ?

kxu,
When I try to connect to foldit using WidgetOtaku's id and key, I get this message:
[12:16] -> *NickServ* identify 1exxxxxxxx17e60 (xxx'd out some of the irc key)
[12:16] --NickServ-- Password incorrect.

Could the irc key be invalid and if so, how do we correct it?

Paul,

you are correct, that irc-key is no longer valid key.
There is new ticket related to this: http://fold.it/portal/node/993111

I should point out that there are two ban lists in IRC....one is the current bans for the channel, known to the server. The server checks this to see whether to let a person into the channel at all. If they don't match any of the bans for the channel, the person is let in.

Chanserv has its own ban list (called autokick). It watches the joins and if someone joins (because they aren't banned) but they match Chanserv's ban list, Chanserv executes the kick/ban command to add a sufficiently matching ban pattern to the server ban list, which then kicks the person. They can't get back in because they are now on the active ban list. This is how channels perma-ban 1000s of trolls across server restarts, while keeping the active server ban list under some limit like 100 for performance reasons. Chanserv would typically remove autokick bans after, say, 5-60 minutes, to keep the active bans low.

When you say you are removing the ban, maybe you are just removing the active ban from the server (that's something like /mode -b). It's been ages...try /msg chanserv akick #channel list and see if Widget is on there.

Widget shows up in the #GoScience ACCESS LIST with 30 level access, there are no AKICK entries for #GoScience so that isn't the problem, amd I don't have access to check the #Global AKICK list.

Widget - can you get into #Global chat or do you not get into any chat windows?

Okay this is my last idea, if this isn't it, it's something about how foldit set up autobans and access lists and punt it to the devs.

The next time WidgetOtaku is on (via game client) do /nickserv status WidgetOtaku . If the game client auto-identified, nickserv will say STATUS WidgetOtaku 3. If it failed, it will say 1 or 0. Meaning, the key must be wrong or never registered.

I tried joining our group using WidgetOtaku's id and key using mibbit and the id gets kicked every time.

Closing although probably not fixed. I believe the problem was that WidgetOtaku had reused an id that she had deleted some time ago and that the IRC Key given to her new id was invalid. Maybe there should be a way to request a new IRC Key.
