Group chat boots team members

Case number:671076-988193
Topic:Server
Opened by:Madde
Status:Closed
Type:Bug
Opened on:Tuesday, August 10, 2010 - 23:29
Last modified:Sunday, August 21, 2011 - 21:15

Several of the members of Void Crushers can't join group chat.

In IRC I see the following messages:

steveB (~nobody@xx.xxx.xx.xx.xxxx.co.uk) has joined #VoidCrushers
Mode #VoidCrushers +b *!~nobody@*.xxx.xx.xx.xxxx.co.uk by ChanServ
steveB was booted from #VoidCrushers by ChanServ (You are not permitted to be on this channel.)

This affects at least steveB, HillObserver, mikedressner and Dolichwier

there was a fix IRC permission page http://fold.it/portal/user/me/edit/IRC but i can't remember it every working. it may be worth a shot. i guess access permissions weren't restored right during the server switch. it also looks like new users joining a group aren't being added to the access list either.

Ask the users that are having trouble joining IRC use the link Judecca posted. Let us know what happens. Thanks.

If you are still having troubles with IRC chat, here are the steps that will, hopefully, fix them.

1) Quit Foldit and any other IRC clients connected to foldit server
2) Log in into this website
3) Go here http://fold.it/portal/user/me/edit/IRC
4) Check the check box
5) Press save

If after that you're still having trouble, please post a response here. Be sure to include the messages generated by the script.

Doing this did nothing before now. Today, I've made update to the server code to actually add functionality that verifies and fixes IRC registration problems.

Hi,

Followed the instructions, and now the group chat window is hung in "Joining chat..." mode.

Would love to talk to the rest of my group, I miss them :)

I also followed ilya.makedon's instructions and am still stuck on "Joining chat..." This has not resolved the issue for me.

Greetings all, as far as chatting is concerned, I have been "disconnected" from the facility since "the great crash of 2010"
Any chance of a fix??

Meanwhile keep smiling/tearing your hair out.

Merf,

what do you mean disconnected? Can foldit connect to the servers at all? Or are you having trouble just with the chat?

SteveB, Dolichwier,

I manually reregisted you. Are you still having trouble logging into the group chat?

Anybody else having trouble with the chat?

Hello again, Yes, disconnected sums my situation up quite neatly. I am not able to receive the normal flash indicators for other people's chat contributions; I am not able to receive any notifications of puzzle expiries, or the arrival of new puzzles. Nor am I able to make any contributions to any chats, that is, my keyboard is not connected to the chat "system". What I haven't got: Chat Puzzle, Chat Global, and Notifications. If I click on, say, Global chat, the message "joining chat" comes up. The panel is unresponsive, the "send" button is unresponsive;I hope that clarifies things.

Thanks IM, whatever you did this time worked. I am able to connect and talk in group chat.

Let me know if you need anything else on my end to help identify the problem and fix it for others.

Merf, does the progress you make on puzzles while folding show up on the scoreboard on this website?

I tinkered with your registration in IRC also. Let me know if it made a difference or not.

Hi IM, The answer to the above is yes, the scores are correct and up to date. However, the chat facility status is unchanged. Interesting n'est pas? It is irksome, but I am well aware that unless it is a global problem, I may have to put up with it. I dare say that I could re load the Foldit software, but since that involves the tedium of repeating the intro excercises, I am reluctant to try it. Hey ho. Many thanks for your efforts.

Merf, It's worth a shot to get another copy of Foldit and run it just to see if the chat will work. Let me know how that goes.

Also, using an alternative IRC client may be worth considering. It's actually more convenient than using the built-in one, IMHO. You can find your IRC login credentials in your profile on this website. Server is 128.95.1.228. Be sure to login with alternative IRC client before starting Foldit.

Well, I tried re loading, and the only result is that I am now going through the tedium of the intro excercises again. Nothing else has changed. I can not load recipies into my cookbook either. I tells me I need to log on to foldit (which I am) so clearly some portion of the software is not seeing me at all. I do not see what else I can do at my end except to keep buggering on as W.C. used to say, but it is vexing.

Oh, and another thing, although I has saved my best solutions in the expectation that I would be able to call them up once the reload was complete, they are lost, which means that I have several thousand points to regain.....
Whether it is relevant or not, I don't know, but I'm running the 64bit version of W7 although nothing else seems affected.
Also ticking the IRC box fails to achieve a thing. It always fails.

Hello again, an experiment Mimi and I tried yesterday has convinced me that my difficulties are local. That is, that they are a function of my laptop. I was able to log in successfully on Mimi's computer. The system "saw" me in the normal way. This means, I guess, that my difficulties are "invisible" to the system which is tough for me but a relief for the system administrators. It's an ill wind...........
Thanks for your efforts IM.

Merf, you said, if works fine on Mimi's PC, on your PC not.
So, did you compare the types of internet-connections?

On my sister's PC (Win7), I also had some connection problems, but it was the router.
Do you use fixed or automatic IPs for LAN?

Sometimes, it helped deactivating the Internet-protocol IPv7 (the newer one), keeping only the IPv4, but this might have been s special solution on my sister's PC.

@ilya.makedon:
Does foldIt use a special port for traffic which should be opened by the router?

Hi CG, no I did not compare internet connection types. As far as I know, I use auto IPs. I will check which IP I am using. I have just returned from a vacation, so things will have to hang fire a bit. Many thasnks for your hints. Cordially, Merf.

Okay, I'll hang on.
As I bought my sister an extra LAN-adapter (LAN before was on-board, some of them can cause problems) and gave a fixed IP (similar to this from the router, but the last digit different).

She also had some problems with chat- or download-programs before.

I think, in respect to LAN/WAN, Win7 behaves more like Vista, and Vista has it's problems with LAN/WAN things TMHO, or let's say more than WinXP.

User 'philcalhoun' on team 'Free-DC' has not been able to join group chat since the server "issues".

I believe he has tried all the posted fixes. Any suggestions?

Good to know, thanks.

And how does the game load recipes and puzzles?
Which protocols are needed?

Greetings all,
This is the latest and last bulletin from me on this issue.
As I said above, I came to the conclusion that my difficulties were local; I
investigated the possibilities of security issues, IRQ conflicts etc. etc. and concluded that the
problem was beyond my diagnostic ability.
I decided to use a linux system instead of windows and seen whether that made any difference.
To this end, I loaded Ubuntu, which is a linux system that can be used as an alternative platform to windows
while retaining windows as another OS. In other words, when you boot up, you are presented with a choice of 2 OS's. As many here will know, Linux will not run .exe files by itself, one needs to use an add on, "Wine"
being the one I found. After a little bit of tinkering, and a little assistance from someone more familiar with Linux than I, Foldit now has (for the very first time since I first joined in the game!) full functionality. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeha!!

Many thanks to you, IM, and to you, CG, for your efforts on my behalf

...amd I thought until now, Linux-based OS are more tricky to setup.
Now, I learned something new.

I will mark this problem as being resolved, then.

Please re-open it if you still get booted from chat.

Bump.
This is happening again.
But it looks to me as client not server problem. My log says:

BOINC says connect to: 128.95.1.227
Using nick: rav3n_pl
Ended Initialization of NoviceGame
SRVR_THRD starting solution upload...
Entering IRC::run
message is identify *my currnet irc key*
SRVR_THRD finished solution upload. took 1.6674 seconds.
SRVR_THRD sending: 174969 989868 group_score
SRVR_THRD sending: 174969 989868 score
SRVR_THRD getting notifications...

It should use nick "rav3npl" not "rav3n_pl".
BUT it is connected to main and puzzle channels as "rav3npl"... have no idea.

IMAGE: http://fold.it/portal/files/chatimg/irc_174969_1308478710.png

Can`t connect to our group chat now.
We need "reconnect to IRC button" and maybe store somewhere in options irc nick?

Tried to fix permissions via site - no workie.

rav3npl is member of #AnthropicDreams, but not rav3n_pl.
Have you use rav3n_pl as irc nick name before ?

I have:
login name: Rav3n_pl
irc nick: rav3npl

Have tried to use "rav3npl" irc nick by external irc and enter team channel - no problem.

That is right, your irc nick name is different than your login name.

Yes, I know. Underscore should be accepted by IRC :)
Have no idea wgo. Using nick "rav3npl" I`m able to connect to our channel from external IRC. Why ingame no workie?

Something is off.
/msg NickServ ghost rav3npl *mycurrentkey*
and I have
NickServ [services@fold.it]: Password incorrect.

wth?
IRC key is changed some time ago by CFC and visible on site. Maybe IRC server is not updated correctly?

Checking registration...
Quit Foldit and try again.
Checking group association...
Group permissions fixed.
The changes have been saved.

When I use "fix irc settings".

If you are able connect to IRC server from Irc-client then IRC server has same irc_key as irc_key showing in your page.
