Questions:
Has anyone ever attempted to configure a protein into the "Known best" configuration using Foldit?

That is, does Foldit provide the tools and the nuance in the tools to "intentionally" guide the protein into a particular configuration?

How close can one come?

------------------------------------
For the Grand Challange puzzles:
1. Are any of the score better than the known solutions?
2. If not how close are the Folders coming to the optimal configuration?
3. Have any of the solutions provide a novel configuration?

------------------------------------
Will there ever be a puzzle of a small protein in a straightened initial configuration?

There is a latin term for it that escapes me. It would be interesting to see what the soloist solutions would look like and whether the solution would be at all close the the "known" configuration.

-------------------------------------
Are there any published papers outlining any observations and learnings gleaned from the study of the Foldit soltions?

--------------------------------------
Are there currently any PhD canidates that are basing their thesis around FoldIt?

--------------------------------------
Has any consideration been given to patenting the foldit UI approach and use of the internet community as a mechanism for solving protein folding problems?

-------------------------------
I think there is a real appitite in the FoldIt community for this type of information.

I'm not qualified to answer these questions, but I've forwarded them to the biochem people who might be able to help you. You can probably expect a reply sometime in the next few days.

We're working on some more detailed answers for your questions now.

Is there anything more specific you'd like to know about how Foldit players have been doing on the Grand Challenges?
