I just discovered this tremendous website yesterday after reading the article in New Scientist, and became a member today.
I have been fascinated by the possibility of designing proteins to perform specific catalytic processes for, well decades! Recently I put together a brief presentation (using Flash) on the type of thing I believe could become a major new industry when solutions relating to protein folding can be solved. I would be very interested to hear comments on whether these sorts of ideas are practical now, or may become practical in the future. They are actually planning on having protein design be part of the game in a few months, so that will be a good start in that direction.

I would recommend checking out Hydrogen@Home, which is a project set up by Jack Schultz to find a means to create a biological fuel cell for hydrogen production. Some similarities in concept for sure. An overview of the project can be found here: http://hydrogenathome.org/Our_Research.html

He has posted here as well looking for a means to further his research. It seems that more and more people are looking at FoldIt as a tool which will be beneficial to tackling various problems. I believe this is a promising foreshadowing for the future potential of FoldIt.

Yeah, I started looking through your slide show back in November when you posted it, but I didn't get through the whole thing. :p

Seems like that sort of thing could be a good application for Foldit. I can confirm that several different types of protein design are planned, and are just starting to be developed now.

Not sure what sort of system will need to be put in place to take various applications and puzzle scenarios into the game to be worked on by players, and then get the resulting protein designs to the right people/organizations. Would be cool though. That's also when people/organizations with a lot of money start paying attention.
