Updates to Our Community Rules

Hey folders!

In order to keep our community safe and friendly, we have made some updates to our community rules. Here's a summary of what we changed:

  • We're emphasizing our zero tolerance policies for discrimination and harassment.
  • We're going to be more lenient on minor offenses. We know everyone has bad days and the occasional curse word or insult slips out. We won't hold it against you forever.
  • We're going to be more strict on major offenses. There's no excuse for hate speech or threats, and we plan to escalate our responses to this kind of behavior.
  • We're trying to be more clear about what counts as cheating. We realize other solutions can be inspiring, and there's a fine line between being inspired and learning from another solution and copying/stealing it. Not only have we updated the descriptions in our guidelines, we've updated our internal policies for judging these cases in order to be more fair.

Our community manager agcohn821 and our player moderators have been collaborating to make these updates. We hope these rules can keep our community safe for everybody and make Foldit a pleasant place to be and talk.

Thank you for following our community rules, and as always, happy folding.

What is with all of the weirdness?

I don't get it. Is there a rampant wave of hate speech going on in the forums? Is it happening on the IRC chat I always keep disabled? Why has there been such a forced message of Black Lives Matter and "we have to clean up our image" stuff?

I guess I don't see where this hate is coming from so it feels completely fabricated.

If it is in certain places then get rid of those functions. I don't see why this particular project would need Discord, IRC, forums, Twitter, and all of the various ways to cause ruckus- if that is indeed where this strife is coming from.

I just wiggle proteins. Whatever fuels this need for so much politcally correct sentiment needs to stop because these thought police messages get on my nerves.

... whatever it may be,

... whatever it may be, having so many social features just opens a project up to trolls that have no involvement in the actual project.

it's always something

Just like a lot of stuff in the game, the Foldit community rules kind of needed an update.

This update tries to clarify the rules so everyone can be on the same page. It's nothing weird or fabricated, it's a result of the moderators (all volunteers) trying to figure out how to deal with issues that come up.

No one gave us this assignment, but over the weird course of 2020, it became clear that the previous version of the rules were a little vague in spots and possibly out of touch with today's internet.

We probably should have moved the main rule, "use common sense and don't be a jerk", up to the top, but there's always next time.

No one is trying to advance a political agenda or police anyone's thoughts.

We're trying to maintain Foldit's reputation as a real scientific project. That's something that everyone, not just the moderators, should be concerned about.

Just to echo Loci's response, it is important to note that many players do choose to use the functions you described for various purposes (skill enhancement, social science connection, advice, etc.). For this reason, we are simply reiterating/updating these guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of all those in the community.
Thank you Loci!
