new chat server issues

I had problems with "nick in use" errors trying to connect my external client (IceChat 9) to the new server as LociOilingIRC. The configuration I normally use with IceChat (IDENTIFY followed by autojoins at a decent interval) didn't seem to work.
I was able to connect using a scratch nickname, then manually issuing a GHOST command for LociOilingIRC. Even that technique doesn't seem to work every time, but I can then manually join the normal channels.
When I connect this way, LociOilingIRC is not op'ed in #veteran and #global.
My in-game nickname, LociOiling, is still connected to the old server, along with a number of others.
Somewhat strangely, LociOiling appears connected to the new server, and is even op'ed in #veteran and #global.
I'm putting off switching LociOiling to the new server for the time being, but obviously others have managed to make the transition.
Just for reference, here's the syntax of the GHOST command.
/msg NickServ GHOST IRC_Nick IRC_key
where IRC_Nick and IRC_key are the values found on "My Page" on fold.it.
Be careful with this command, since you can expose your IRC key to the world if you get it wrong. IceChat has a console tab, which is probably a safer place than one of the channels. The leading slash (/) is part of the command, a primitive survivor from the days of punch cards and JCL.
