Hi all,

I'm Patrick, also known as Sockrates, and I've been live-streaming various video games on the website Twitch.tv for a few months now. I'm an undergraduate student at UC Davis majoring in pharmaceutical chemistry and an aspiring pharmacist with a love for science. I decided to meld my love for video games and science together and begin streaming Foldit on my Twitch channel, https://www.twitch.tv/s0ckrates

I already did my first livestream of Foldit where I cleared all of the tutorials and one beginner puzzle before playing a little Factorio (after which I improved upon the high score off-stream.) While I was preparing for stream I noticed that there isn't anybody in the Twitch streaming directory streaming Foldit, so I wanted to take a moment to reach out to the community here in order to change that. If there are any fellow Foldit streamers I should know about, please toss me a message on Twitter (@MrSockrates), or on Twitch.

As to when I plan on streaming Foldit, I don't have a set schedule but you can follow me on Twitch and Twitter and get notified when I go live. I plan to do so whenever I get some spare moments during my school week, as sort of bonus streams to my weekly stream where I livestream whatever video game I please as a way to destress, express myself, and interact with passersby and loyal viewers alike in chat.

Also if you're new to Twitch and have no idea what it is, I wrote an article on mmos.com that compares it to a giant couch, of all things. https://mmos.com/editorials/twitch-online-gamers-internet-couch
Feel free to ask me in chat any questions you have regarding Twitch culture!

I plan to go live tonight for an hour or so moments after publishing this post, so please stop on by and say hi if you get the chance! If things go well over time, I'll be much more encouraged to keep streaming Foldit alongside the other games I want to share with the world. Try not to backseat unless I ask for tips, but other than that, enjoy the stream!

This is a really neat idea.

As a fellow gamer and science fanatic, I love this idea.

If you do get a schedule set up, message me! I'd love to watch your streams and potentially promote them on Foldit's Twitter if you'd be comfortable with that.

Looking forward seeing your folding in action!

Thanks for the interest! My

Thanks for the interest! My first stream ended 1 hour later than I initially intended so the entire broadcast is roughly 2 hours. As a short one sentence post-lab report, alpha helices are overpowered as I would discover late in the stream doing the beginner puzzle. Still trying to figure out how I can perfect a hairpin sort of design that works better.

I'd love the cross-promotion on Twitter if you're so inclined! Every connection counts being a humble small-time streamer, and it's easier for me to interact with everyone who finds my stream since the chat isn't flooded with spam unlike the larger channels.

Schedule-wise I've thought about doing 'Folding Fridays' but currently that's reserved for doing my weekly de-stress stream, so no promises quite yet.

The broadcast is actually archived on my Twitch channel for about 60 days, so you can check that out under the 'Videos' tab if you're curious.

Not sure what happened with that initial bit at the top, oops.

I tried to check out your Foldit video online

but Twitch refused to load it for me. I'll try again in a couple days to see if I can view it. Currently, Foldit has about 1.4k followers on Twitter and 14k follower on Facebook, so I'm hoping it would get you a few extra views, at least. :)

As for the weird bit at the top on forum posts, I found out (the hard way) that you HAVE to have to put in a 'subject' on your responses or else it will take the first bit of your comment and repeat it in the 'subject' line.

Refusing to load it?

There's a separate tab where my past broadcasts are located, labeled "Videos." That's where to go when I'm not live.
As to my next stream I'm still debating on that, finals week is upon me and as much as I'd rather procrastinate on studying I gotta get my obligations done first.

Yeah, I was able to see your past video thumbnails...

But when I clicked on them, they just wouldn't load. Could just be my browser needing an update, though.

Good luck with finals! Looking forward to seeing some broadcasts when you are a bit less obligation-burdened.

OP helices

The mega helix is definitely OP in the beginner puzzles. It gives the whole protein structure, which is better than random. Most beginning players leave a good deal of the protein random, so you end up ahead of them. In some puzzles you will have more competition from people who are also structuring the whole protein (lots of well-formed sheets and helixes, not much loop).

Glad to see you streaming foldit! I hope to catch you live some time.

Enjoyed the live stream

Hey S0ckrates,
I enjoyed catching your stream live yesterday. It was fun watching you grab some rank ups before the puzzle ended. I'm glad you dropped in to foldit global chat and let us know you were streaming - that's a good way to catch players' attention. Hopefully more players will check out your stream in the coming weeks.

Yay for more streaming!

If you know in advance (like an hour or two) when you are planning to stream Foldit, feel free to shoot me a direct message on the site here and I'll try to get a post up on the official Foldit Twitter.

Good news and Bad news

S0ckrates has inspired me to try streaming foldit myself, and I have been working for a while to learn how and get all the pieces in place to make that happen. The Good news is, I had a successful first stream today, and a few foldit players even came out to watch and chat! The Bad news is, even though I checked the box saying to archive the stream to video, I apparently failed to save that setting, so there is no video. I will definitely test that setting and stream again soon!

Video is up of Denovo and Design

I streamed for a couple of hours this evening, and the video is up (search Susume2 on twitch.tv) for the next 2 weeks. The first hour is on the denovo (1431) and the second is a from-scratch monomer design (1433). If you enjoy the video, please tune in live on an upcoming stream (either S0ckrates' or mine).

2nd video up

Video is up of me trying to fold a barrel protein similar to a natural one I found in the Protein Data Bank (rcsb.org/pdb). The video is pretty choppy, for unknown reasons, but the audio is ok, and foldit is not a fast moving game so hopefully it's tolerable. Starting around 8:00 S0ck and I have a longish convo about the video being choppy - the folding commences again at 17:00.

unable to connect

I enjoyed watching socrates's video but i can't open the live stream above ("unable to connect"). The main point I observed was the very high quality of socrate's stream (both definition, voice, comments). I see it as a perfect tool for creating tutorial videos (à la Susume). Is it then possible to edit the videos and keep the most relevant extracts?

Could you repeat the way of watching the streams and/or videos here please? Thanks both of you for this.

(btw, I tried myself a stream long time ago, but it slowed down my computer a lot, do you have this problem?)

Streaming is tough!

Alright, one thing at a time.

I stream at 720p 30fps, on Twitch. Typically since I am not a Twitch Partner, my channel does not get quality options to downscale for weaker connections. Sorry 'bout that! Although, if this is happening to you for any Twitch stream, then provide me with further details (browser, OS, etc. I might not be able to help you this way, but it's worth a shot.)

My Twitch channel is here: https://www.twitch.tv/s0ckrates
This is the link to follow when I am actually live on Fridays. There's live chat right next to it. If I am not live, it may switch to a channel that I "host" as way to feature other streamers that I like or support.
The videos tab of my Twitch channel is here: https://www.twitch.tv/s0ckrates/videos/all
This is where you go when you've missed the broadcast live and are looking for my past broadcasts/highlights on Twitch, *with* chat replay of who said what at that point in the video.
My YouTube channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrSockrates
This is where my YouTube exports go. There's no chat replay here, since it's YouTube!

It is possible for me to "Highlight" past broadcasts, but I can only take out single segments. To edit them further, the possible way I see doing it is me Highlighting my broadcast, exporting it to YouTube, using a YouTube downloader, and then using your favorite video editing software from there. I do not record my broadcasts locally, so this is the only way I can see to do this. I did upload my get yourself folding special to YouTube, but I typically do not archive my broadcasts to YouTube; there hasn't been a demand for this kind of thing quite yet so it's not worth the effort for me. Let me know if you have a specific episode in mind!

Also yes, streaming bogs down a computer a lot. My hardware is a little old, but still good enough since I built it to play video games. If you're streaming from your typical storebought computer from a couple years back, you will definitely have performance issues. Heck, even when I stream I already get some lag just having OBS open. I'm in dire need of a CPU/Motherboard upgrade (or really just a new system build at this point) but I don't have enough money to frivolously spend on dorky hardware endeavors just yet.
