The previously reported crash bug, http://fold.it/portal/node/2003127, is still unresolved. This but makes all symmetric design puzzles unplayable for some, but not all, foldit users.

I opened the [DEVPREV] Symmetric Dimmer: Buried Hydrogen Bond Networks puzzle dated 4/27/2017. I did a manual shake and the puzzle crashed in under 2 seconds. I've attached the contents of the log.txt file. I was running on Win 10 with a devprev release downloaded immediately before opening the puzzle.

I can confirm that symmetry puzzles are still broken, though the conditions for crashing are not entirely consistent. Win 7 64, build ID 20170427-df30f666e0-win_x86-devprev.

1. using beginner symmetry design puzzle, crashed during rebuild in first 2 minutes of DRW script (log Copy 18)
2. beginner puzzle, ran remix script, but no crash - then switched to new HBN puzzle and crashed on first shake (log Copy 19)
3. new HBN puzzle - shake ok, remix script ok, changed puzzle to 1370 and back to HBN, shake ok, reset puzzle and shake ok, then crashed when closing puzzle (log Copy 20)
4. opened HBN puzzle in previously-played pose, shook, reset puzzle, crashed on shake (log copy 21)
5. opened HBN puzzle, reset puzzle, shake, crash (log Copy 22)

The foldit error entries in the event log for this evening do not match the timestamps of the log files, so I can;t match them with certainty to the above crashes, but here they are in chronological order. There were no other foldit crashes during this time window.

Is anyone here crashing on platforms other than Windows?

I ran clients on all 3 platforms on shake, and only Windows crashed at ~200 iterations.

I've the impression that several issues are linked to the hardware.

For example, due to repetitive problems on Mac Os, I installed Linux on a MacBook pro => I get the same family of problems (+ new ones).

My computers are slowing down with the years (I suspect fan dysfunctions) with more crashes. Temporary network disruption also cause crashes, as well as screen savers etc.

No crash on Mac OS

(latest DEVPREV updated today)

1) I ran my top (shared to scientist) (windows) 12246 result on a Mac (Intel Core i7, 8Go - MacBook Pro with OSX 10.8.5), with manual shake all, local shake (rebuild is disabled), Random Idealize, tvdl remix and several other recipes: no crash.

2) Ran shared to scientist 11455 pts "crash on idealize selected" result on the Mac: shake all ok, recipe with idealizeSelected ok

Conclusion: no crash on a Mac OS.

If people can play the puzzle

[DEVPREV] Symmetric Dimer Design

and try to get it to crash, that would be very helpful. This is an older puzzle that didn't have the filters enabled, so we might be able to narrow it down if this puzzle does or doesn't crash.

I can reliably crash this puzzle, but the only way I have found so far is to run a script that rebuilds. I can't crash it by rebuilding by hand, or by shaking.

Using Devprev Symmetric Dimer Design puzzle:
1. Reset puzzle, start DRW script, all default options, crashes within 5 seconds (log copy 23)

2. Restart client, reset puzzle, start eDRW script, all default options, crashes within 5 seconds (log copy 24)

3. Try a bunch of non-rebuild stuff without crashing, then run a rebuild test script and crash in first 5 seconds (log copy 25)

4. Reset puzzle, run rebuild test script, crash in 5 seconds (log copy 26)

5. Reset puzzle, rebuild and stop after every found pose, over and over by hand, no crash. Start rebuild test script, crash immediately (log copy 27)

I made a simple test script that reliably crashes all 3 symmetry puzzles (devprev Symmetric Dimer Design, Beginner Puzzle <150 Symmetry Design, and devprev HBN) on Remix. Sometimes it is the first Remix that crashes; sometimes the 2nd. Let me know if you want log files or Windows events; I have lots. You should have lots of crash logs from all three puzzles; if not, the mechanism to send the crash logs up to you is not working.

For what it's worth, when I use a similar script that Rebuilds instead of Remixing, I see the symmetric (gray) chain change shape just before the crash. That means Rebuild finds a pose, calculates the new position for the symmetric chain, and draws it on the screen before crashing. With the Remix script, I do not see the new pose on the screen before the crash - I think it only gets drawn when the slot containing the new pose gets loaded, which is the line of code after the Remix call, and the script doesn't get that far. When it doesn't crash on the first Remix, I see the new pose from the 1st remix, just not the one that crashes.

Have you ever thought of releasing a test version of the software (update group "test" instead of "devprev") that has extra print statements aimed at locating the symmetry bug(s) specifically? I guarantee you would find a group of players willing to install and run it.

Windows 7, New DEVPREV update from today:

1) No crash (and no rebuild)on my top 12146 (end game) shared to scientist solution.

2) Ran shared to scientist 11455 pts "crash on idealize selected" result on the Mac: shake all ok, recipe with idealizeSelected CRASHED

I reopened the puzzle to see if it was reproducible (knew it was but this time grabbed more log data)
Looks like 2 separate errors causing problems... Segmentation Fault and a memory allocation error (double free?)
(these are the most common errors on the monomer puzzles now for me as well.)

Thanks for the feedback on this one everyone.

We are working hard to debug it, but it is proving very difficult to track down. It only seems to happen on Windows, and also seems to disappear when we run the 'debug' version of the game - a 'Heisenbug' - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heisenbug

We are really excited to have players get working on symmetric designs, especially in light of the recent success of a player made structure, so any further information you might have on the nature of this bug would be greatly appreciated.

Yes.

The issue is that the bug crashes in different parts of the code every time. This likely means that the actual problem is happening somewhere else in a way that doesn't cause things to crash immediately. We have tried a number of tools that are designed to help in these situations, but haven't gotten anything so far.

I'm hoping that with more specific data on the nature of the bug, I might be able to narrow things down to a portion of code that I can review carefully by hand and discover the bug.

There seems to have been improvement with the new build in June 2017. Of the three symmetry puzzles I tested, two are still crashing quickly and reliably with my simple remix test script, but one has stopped crashing with the script. That's not to say it wouldn't crash if I played with it more, but a little progress is better than none. I do now have log files with crashes and log files for the same puzzle, same actions, no crashes.

1. 100+ iterations succeeded (log copy 46)

3. 700+ iterations succeeded (log copy 48)

Just to be sure there was a real improvement in the HBN puzzle, I re-tested it with the previous devprev build. The log files are confusing because I had other clients running in that directory at the same time, but you can see the final call to ActionBuild.
