Puzzle scores between client and website not as accurate as they should be

Although the scoreboards are updating better since the fix (after the AWS move), they are still not updating as well as they were prior to the move. I've noticed that the scores stop updating between client/server at the slightest connection drop. This rarely happened previously but is now noticeable on every client I have open (usually 3-6). It is especially noticeable when running two clients on the same puzzle (different tracks, of course), so it should be easy to replicate.

Another pattern I've noticed is frequent lockups when trying to simply refresh Shared Solutions. There are 4 days, 9 hours left on puzzle 1274 and according to the scoreboard, I had the highest score for our group. I went to click on Shared Solutions and the client froze.

Then I checked the site and saw that I was ranked 56th, instead of 13th and it showed a score 350 points below what my client showed. After restarting the client, it showed rank 26, the correct score and now matching what the site scoreboard reflects.

From what I can tell, the other two puzzles currently running (1272 and 1273) have not had a problem yet.

This computer is running version: 20160805-86bc4e969d-win_x86

The preview button would not work on my last comment above. All it appeared to do was refresh the page--no error messages. When I manually refreshed the page nothing changed either. I finally went ahead and clicked "Save".

This was using an up-to-date version of Chrome (which I always use for Foldit) and Windows 10.

Preview did not work on this post either.

This is ridiculous. I just started a new 1274 client for evo 26 minutes ago. I stopped a script so I could check on the puzzle notes in shared folders. Client locked and apparently hadn't even updated the fact that I had successfully evolved it hadn't been registered to the site. I reloaded the client and the rank up registered at that point.

So we need to check every 26 minutes or less to make sure that our scores are being successfully updated and ensure that we're getting credit for having successfully evolved puzzles?

I first logged this problem 4 days ago and no response yet.

I wouldn't take a lack of response to mean it isn't being looked into, just that I don't have an update on this. :)

I had the same problems on a recent puzzle, and I didn't take the update to main. Lost a couple places on 1273. very frustrating when a slow computer loses a whole day of processing time. So you are not crazy

I'm also seeing recent instances of this same longstanding issue.

Some clients lose their connection to server. Not all clients are affected; some clients at the same release level running on the same machine are hit, but others are fine. The disconnected clients seem to be operating normally, but may hang if you try to upload a solution. Clicking on the little hardhat (?) icon next to "notifications" may also cause a hang condition.

This issue has often occurred after a major server outage. We haven't had a major outage recently, but there have been several chat disconnects in the past week or so. Since parts of the client depend on IRC, perhaps a brief chat outage is enough to cause issues with scoreboards.

It seems like the client should realize that it's disconnected if it hasn't had updates from the server in *x* hours. (Maybe a setting adjustable via options.txt.) The client should then gray the scoreboards and change the hardhat icon to something with a little "x" through it. Ideally the client would refresh all its comm settings and attempt to reconnect at intervals of *y* minutes.

We're still not sure what's causing this - we're unable to reproduce it here at the UW.

Note that we haven't moved to Amazon Web Services yet (that was just a preparation phase), so it's possible this problem will solve itself with more reliable servers. In the meantime, I'd suggest making sure you refresh a client right before a puzzle expires to make sure your scores are recorded.
