Switched from my desktop to laptop (both running Windows 10). Hadn't run foldit on the laptop for a few months. I've now crashed 9 times on my laptop. Twice I was not even working on a puzzle. I was posting a message to chat. The crashes occur within five minutes of starting foldit. Doesn't seem to matter what is happening. After half a dozen crashes and chatting in Veteran, I uninstalled and reinstalled a clean version of foldit. Did not use the old foldit folder, so no old puzzles or recipes. Still crashes.

Dell Inspiron 15z
Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit OS
Intel i7, 2.00GHz
8 GB RAM

My desktop is not having any problems with crashes. Both computers have the latest Windows 10 updates.

See also RAH's forum post "Foldit keeps failing under Windows 10".

YGK posted an update to an old feedback with a similar issue. In YGK's case, as here, the traceback lists alListeneriv +2897 as the first entry. Reinstalling may have resolved that issue.

I haven't had any issues specific to Windows 10 after nearly a year, but plenty of regular crashes.

Some other random thoughts follow.

On current main, 20160502-30496ba116-win_x86, check that you have these directories:

cmp-binary-2d9e86ef893a241e1537090b282c38cd
cmp-database-4aa3799f5de6b1475e948fb77682d90f
cmp-resources-f3f5689675a05a73fb3d5d1f6e8950e6

These directories are pointed to by version-binary.txt, version-database.txt, and version-resources.txt.

I normally run multiple clients on a single machine, but each client runs in its own directory, so I have c:\foldit\foldit1 for one client, c:\foldit\foldit2 for the second, c:\foldit\foldit3 for the third, and so on. On Windows, you can simply copy and rename an existing Foldit installation folder to create a new one. (Don't expect the uninstaller to work if you do this, however.)

The only time a start a second client from a given folder is share a solution without interrupting a long-running recipe. This works because things like the current creditbest solution are saved as files with the extension .ir_solution.

I had bad experiences running multiple clients from a single directory back when I started, which is why I went with the multiple directory solution.

Foldit leaves a lot of .ir_solution and other files lying around. This one reason why periodically starting with a fresh install may be a good idea. I install to a new directory, then use to replace my existing directories. Be sure to save your options.txt and all.macro from the old setup, then copy them into the new clean install. (I also back up the old setup before cleaning house, just in case.) This type of cleaning means your old solutions (autosaves, quicksaves, creditbest, etc.) will no longer be available, so don't do it in the middle of playing a puzzle unless you've shared your work.

Some crashes may generate a debug.txt, and debug.txt may get uploaded automatically to Foldit central. Not all crashes generate a debug.txt, and I've never had any definite confirmation that debug.txt gets uploaded, but we can still hope.

Sometimes crashes may depend on settings. If you're using the selection interface, see if you still crash in the original interface. If you're using the advanced GUI, try turning it off for a bit. Switch to a basic coloring like "hydro" and a basic view like "cartoon" or "cartoon thin".

I'd also be suspicious of video drivers. Some manufacturers offer tools to check and update driver versions. I know there were some video driver issues when I upgraded to Win 10 last year, but they seemed to mostly sort themselves out.

One thing that's still an issue seems to be video mode. It seems like anything that changes the screen resolution may cause clients to crash or hang. On my Win 10 Pro, logging in as another user with clients running seems to cause this type of crash. I haven't got around to opening a feedback on it, however. Obviously most run-of-the-mill applications just keep going, although Windows does like to rearrange your desktop icons as part of the package.

Out of curiosity, do you have sound turned on? The alListener line corresponds to the sound library we use.

So, I have changed 2 things. Don't know if they will make a difference. But I unchecked "Reduce network Bandwidth". Also, I got a pop up while running foldit saying windows needed me to sign in again - have not seen this before. Don't know if it is related or not. So I switched to a local account sign on, instead of windows sign on. Will see if I still get crashes after making these changes.

Still crashing and crashes seem intermittent. Sometimes when I stop a script, sometimes when script is running, sometimes I am manually moving protein or using idealize or tweek

for information: we were able to stop the client from crashing by disabling the audio device on TomTaylor's laptop.

Instruction for Windows machine:

1) On windows, goto Control Panel - > Device Manager
2) then click on Sound, video and game controllers
3) right-click each devices under that and choose disable (windows may ask for a reboot, you can try without first, or reboot and continue with step 4) below)
4) now the foldit client will says something about no audio device on startup
5) that is ok, you should be able to play without it/them enabled

To re-enable the audio device(s) when you need sound again (for thing other then Foldit) or when the Foldit client is corrected: just repeat steps 1), 2) and 3) but this time choose enable.

Any questions, just ask in #global

Having the same problem on a Windows 10 Lenovo Horizon. I had no problems until the latest batch of Windows updates that my computer installed a couple days ago. Now, the program crashes immediately on trying to load puzzle 1249 or 1250, and about five minutes or less into working on puzzle 1251. I've tried reinstalling and also using the Windows Program Compatibility Troubleshooter that attempts to run the program under other settings (Windows 7 or 8 compatibility mode, whatever that means) with no luck. I've attached the resulting error messages from the troubleshooter.

Hi, could you re-attached your log.txt file, I don't see it

In looking over the update package that seems to have disabled it, the drivers that were changed and most likely to be involved were pci.inf, tpm.inf, sdbus.inf, and input.inf. There were also program updates to Adobe Flash (security update), McAfee Multi Access Total Protection, "Security Update Package_for_Rollup_Fix" and "Update for Package_for_KB3149135" if that helps any.

disabling all audio devices in device manager (per Berto's instructions) has allowed me to run foldit client on windows 10 without crashes now. Thanks to Berto for this fix!
Of course, this means I have no sound in any other programs I would want to run while I am running foldit which is FAR from optimal.

Hopeful that Devs will fix the sound file so that audio devices can be enabled

Maybe you could disable the audio devices, start foldit, then enable them again - if the client only checks once at the beginning, it will keep running and you can have sound in your other programs. Still far from optimal, but maybe not quite so bad.

You cannot restart devices without restarting which would close foldit

Still no fix for this?

Audio devices have been disable on my PC and foldit works, although audio is now disabled for ALL apps. Not a very good solution.

When foldit starts a popup error box says "Can't open audio device" so the app does initially check for audio. Audio is disabled throughout the app meaning this should be a trivial bug fix.

No audio device found, disable foldit audio.
No audio desired, disable foldit audio.

I'll probably get flack saying I don't know what I'm talking about. True, I don't have the source code, but instead prove me wrong. Either way I'll have a computer that doesn't crash every 2 minutes :)

I don't think anyone is listening. Until more players have this issue (which may happen in the next few months as win 10 upgrade for free is expiring), they have no impetus to fix this small issue

Unfortunately not all Win 10 computers are affected. My Win 10 desktop has no problem running foldit. Bertro saw some internet comments saying it may be a particular audio chip. If so there may be only a handful of computers with that audio chip, hence no impetus to fix this small issue.

That's a good point, Tom! Don't worry, we're listening - keep in mind that as a small team, we don't have access to all possible win10 setups that may be able to replicate this issue and therefore it takes longer to replicate, pinpoint and fix!

FoldIt crashes on my Microsoft Surface Pro. That is a mainstream computer. One of the reasons I bought this computer is so I could run Foldit on a tablet since the screen is detachable. Unfortunately it crashes within the first five minutes of use.

I just tried turning off the audio drivers and now, after 10 minutes, it appears to be stable. It is a shame I now have to loose the audio for all my other apps, but I'm glad to be back in the game!

Good to hear this workaround is working for you!

This would appear to confirm that not using the audio library is the fix.

Patient: Doctor, it hurts when I do this.
Doctor: Well, don't do that!

I bring up this old joke because it appears the issue is being over analyzed. Foldit crashes on some computers when the audio library is used. Solution don't use the audio library. Any computer can be used to test whether the audio library is initialized or used.

Those who want to use foldit audio can still turn it on. But this brings up another question. How many veterans still use foldit audio? Would anyone be upset if audio was completely removed from foldit? I asked this question of my group and in veteran chat and no said they use foldit audio.

Inkycatz, thank you for your feedback. Good to know someone is listening.

I would love to see this fixed and would not miss the audio one bit. I haven't used the Foldit audio for years & I miss being able to play other music on my computer while Foldit is running.

Hi there!
We are currently discussing removing OpenAL temporarily until we can get this figured out. This should help the issue. Although this will result in a lack of sound, we believe a (ideally temporary) soundless game is better than a crashing game. This is also intended to help with: http://fold.it/portal/node/2002577 - therefore, same message.

Also see: http://fold.it/portal/node/2002612

Thanks for the reports!

I assume people experiencing this issue have already checked for updates to their audio drivers ?

Has anyone tried rolling back the driver to and older version ?

In another game my daughter plays that was experiencing openAL errors, this solved the crashing issues. from what i understand the redistributable called by the game was not compatible with the 3D sound settings in the newest driver. Perhaps disabling 3D sounds would also fix this.

I have installed all the latest drivers including audio drivers on my laptop. I have not tried rolling back to an older audio driver. All other apps that use audio work fine.

One reason I haven't tried older audio drivers is because I've found foldit is much more stable without audio initialized. Except for puzzle 1266 (Crystal Symmetry) I've have zero crashes in two weeks.

If I want sound for other apps I can disable audio drivers, run foldit instance(s), then enable audio drivers. A small price to pay for no crashes.

May also want to try disabling enhancements rather than having to stop and start device all the time. In the taskbar search, type 'Sound' and select Sound Control Panel item from the list of results. The Sound properties box will open. Under the Playback tab, right-click the Default Device Speakers/Headphones whatever you are using and select Properties. Under enhancements there is an option to disable sound enhancements.

Sound enhancements were already disabled. A hot fix was released yesterday to disable audio. I ran it for a few hours with audio drivers enabled and no crashes. Will run it all today and see what happens.

Those who had no audio issues will want to take note on how many crashes occur before or after yesterday's hot fix. I think there will be less crashes with audio disabled.
