We have been having some hardware glitches recently, and during one of these a table containing score data was corrupted. As I was cleaning the data, I lost all our old user and group scores.
The good news is that I have full backups, so not a minutes' worth of scores have actually been lost. The bad news is that it will probably be a day or two before the scores reappear on the site. So just stay tuned and don't jump at the feedback reflexively, I will probably have quite a lot of duplicate feedback issues related to this issue anyway...
Foldit Developer Preview
We are making the Foldit Developer Preview available to all of you. Through the Preview, you can try out the features we will be rolling out in our updates ahead of time, practise new tools, play with new features, and let us know what you think about the quality of the upcoming update before it goes live.
To avoid unfairness, you will not be able to play regular puzzles. There are some puzzles set aside just for trying out the Preview with some proteins.
To try out the Preview, you have to make a small change in your Foldit directory, which is described in the FAQ.
I've added a new section to the site -- a place where you can post or view feedback. I hope this will lead to more clarity in posting feedback, less confusion of multiple issues under one thread, and a better sense of who's responsible for doing what, and when they expect to do it. In a word, more accountability to you, the players.
I'm currently going through all our old forum topics to put issues into the feedback tracker and/or close them. Once that's done, I will probably make the bug and suggestion forums read-only.
Please use the new feedback system instead of the forums, and instead of emailing admin@foldit. All bug reports, crash log, suggestions, etc. can go there. From now on, this will be the way to get an issue listened to, and I won't take care that miscellaneous things posted in news item comments, forum posts, or on the chat will be accounted for. Of course, for private issues, you should still private message me.
A Little Update
We've made some small changes to the game, smoothing out many of the issues players have had with the last release. Here are a few of the things we've done:
Bug fixes: Our code monkeys have been hard at work rooting out bugs from the last release that had caused the game to crash for some players. The game should be much more stable now. Not only that, but we've managed to trim down the size of the downloads and reduce the amount of RAM needed to run the game.
Level adjustments: We've been making some slight modifications to the intro puzzles in an attempt to make them easier to understand. Level 6-3, The Final Challenge, has also been removed entirely for the time being due to widespread complaints of its difficulty. This process of adjustment will continue over the next few weeks as we learn more about where players get stuck and how to help them build up their folding skill.
Classic coloring: We've changed the backbone coloring back to the classic green and brown, due to popular request. The sidechains are still colored orange and blue to show their hydrophobicity. There is also a new Colorblind Mode coloring available in Menu > General Options.
New sounds: Also, you may have noticed that a few of the sounds are different. We are starting to phase out the old background music in preparation for the new soundtrack that we'll be adding to the game.
Feedback in chat or the forums is always welcome. Let me know what you think.
