Feedback tracker

Hi Folders,

I've added a new section to the site -- a place where you can post or view feedback. I hope this will lead to more clarity in posting feedback, less confusion of multiple issues under one thread, and a better sense of who's responsible for doing what, and when they expect to do it. In a word, more accountability to you, the players.

I'm currently going through all our old forum topics to put issues into the feedback tracker and/or close them. Once that's done, I will probably make the bug and suggestion forums read-only.

Please use the new feedback system instead of the forums, and instead of emailing admin@foldit. All bug reports, crash log, suggestions, etc. can go there. From now on, this will be the way to get an issue listened to, and I won't take care that miscellaneous things posted in news item comments, forum posts, or on the chat will be accounted for. Of course, for private issues, you should still private message me.

A Little Update

We've made some small changes to the game, smoothing out many of the issues players have had with the last release. Here are a few of the things we've done:

Bug fixes: Our code monkeys have been hard at work rooting out bugs from the last release that had caused the game to crash for some players. The game should be much more stable now. Not only that, but we've managed to trim down the size of the downloads and reduce the amount of RAM needed to run the game.

Level adjustments: We've been making some slight modifications to the intro puzzles in an attempt to make them easier to understand. Level 6-3, The Final Challenge, has also been removed entirely for the time being due to widespread complaints of its difficulty. This process of adjustment will continue over the next few weeks as we learn more about where players get stuck and how to help them build up their folding skill.

Classic coloring: We've changed the backbone coloring back to the classic green and brown, due to popular request. The sidechains are still colored orange and blue to show their hydrophobicity. There is also a new Colorblind Mode coloring available in Menu > General Options.

New sounds: Also, you may have noticed that a few of the sounds are different. We are starting to phase out the old background music in preparation for the new soundtrack that we'll be adding to the game.

Feedback in chat or the forums is always welcome. Let me know what you think.

Recent crashes (and what you can do to help)

If Foldit has crashed for you, it would be very helpful for us if you could email us the log, so we can find out exactly what happened. You can find the log file:

  • on Windows XP at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Foldit\log.txt
  • on Windows Vista at C:\ProgramData\Foldit\log.txt
  • on a Mac, just search for foldit.crash.log and/or log.txt
  • on Linux, log.txt in your Foldit directory

Please email it to us at admin@fold.it.

Phasing out old scores

Due to the slight changes to scoring that were posted with the latest update, as well as the fixing of the bug that allowed confusion of soloist and evolver scores, we will be phasing out old scores up to the point the update was released. This will take place over a period of about a month, so the transition will be relatively smooth.

We will also be cutting off global soloist and evolver scores 4 months into the past. That is, your scores will be the sum of you scores on the individual puzzles that have taken place in the last 4 months. Of course, you will only notice the effects of this about 4 months from now.

Due to these changes, your global soloist and evolver scores will no longer be a good measure of how much you have contributed to Foldit in the past if you no longer play so much. So we will be introducing another system to recognise the achievements of past masters, but for now I won't reveal the details.

Have fun folding,
