The Foldit website has been updated! Take a look around, familiarize yourself with the new layout, and try out all the new features!

Remember that you must download and reinstall the Foldit app to keep playing. The old Foldit app is incompatible with the new website and cannot load new puzzles. See our blog post with instructions for importing preferences and recipes from your old app.

We've posted two new Foldit puzzles so you can get back to folding right away. On Friday we'll launch a fresh protein design puzzle to debut a brand new Neural Net Mutate tool.

Some other notes about the website update:

  • We have an issue with mac installer, so Foldit is currently unavailable for mac. We are working around the clock to fix this! The Mac installer is up and running!
  • IRC chat is currently down, but we should have it back online in the next day or so. In the meantime, you can chat with other Foldit players on Discord
  • The old website has been archived in a read-only state. Soon it will be available at https://old.fold.it.
  • Old puzzles can be viewed from the website, but you cannot download them into the new app.
  • Private messages have not been transferred from the old website, but they will be accessible at https://old.fold.it.

The old.fold.it site says its down for maintenance.

Also, at least in Firefox, I have to click through a couple of layers of warning to get to old.fold.it. It's some sort of issue with the certificate, maybe just that the website is old.fold.it and not fold.it.

Our cert is only for fold.it, so when you visit old.fold.it, it will complain that the cert doesn't match the website's URL. I've removed the cert for now, so it is just using plain old http. We hope to get old.fold.it its own cert here soon so that we can re-enable https. Thanks for the report!

Old site on http asking for login. Current credentials don't work. What's the trick?

Sorry, the old website is still unavailable. We hope to bring it back online in read-only mode later this week. Thanks for your patience!

The new website is slow, sometimes is inaccessible for short periods and the results are not refreshed neither in the website nor the program. What is the reason for this?

We're aware of the issue, but have not yet tracked down the cause. The freezes are especially odd because we did not see this issue at all with the test site at https://dev.fold.it/, which is virtually identical to the main site.

We are actively debugging this, so stay tuned for updates!

The difference may be caused by the access of the users which is not the case of the dev.fold.it, so in my opinion the workload is different. The new software behind the new webpage is not significantly slower than the old one (one months ago for example )?

Wanted to share some data - I've got about 40 students in my class group that bridged the old to new site conversion. All have downloaded the new app. After they'd reported many issues I surveyed them: About 1/3 are able to log in and progress is updated, 1/3 are getting in but progress isn't updating, and the final third cannot log in at all. Not sure how to advise them except to be patient.

@dheilman that sounds about right given the state of things. On Windows at least, it seems like Foldit won't start up on some systems. If your students all have their own laptops, that might account for some of the differences. If they do get Foldit started, they may experience frequent freezes, where the game stops responding for a minute or so. The Foldit website also seems to have freezes, and even goes offline for minutes at a time. Meanwhile, the test system, dev.fold.it, continues to be reasonably stable, but it also has the issue with Foldit not running on some Windows systems. Patience is the best advice.
