Foldit Black Lives Matter Statement
Dear Foldit Players,
We had previously shared a statement in support of Black Lives Matter from the Rosetta Commons, of which Foldit is a part of. You can find that statement here. However, we have come to recognize that we have a separate Foldit community and acknowledge that it is crucial that we make our own statement:
Foldit was created with the intention that everyone could meaningfully contribute to science. The Foldit project is rooted in a commitment to equality and a belief that equal participation matters. We do not accept the exclusion or marginalization of any group. Following these principles, we, the Foldit team, stand in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. We condemn the longstanding patterns of injustice and police brutality that have been perpetrated against Black individuals in the United States and around the world. We stand in solidarity with those who seek justice for the lives that were taken. We also recognize that Black voices are underrepresented and uncredited in science, and science is worse off as a result. We acknowledge that, in conjunction with our mission of equity, the Foldit team can do more to ensure that Black voices are heard and represented. We are committed to upholding our stance of support and solidarity by way of meaningful action.
We are currently consulting with the Rosetta Commons Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee on concrete steps that the Foldit team as a group and as individuals can take to address and dismantle systemic racism. We will be laying out these steps as we continue to work with this committee. We invite all members of the Foldit community to engage in conversation with us regarding how we can do more to ensure that Foldit is a supportive environment. Please feel free to directly message community liaison agcohn821 with regards to this.
The Foldit Team
