Trying to log into Foldit, it's throwing "SSL Connect error: Error contacting clients" on all my clients
Status: Closed » Open |
The same problem is happening for some, but not all, today.
The problem prevents newly started clients from connecting.
With an already running client, the symptoms include a dialog box stating "SSL connect error: Error contacting server" when attempting to upload a solution. In the "Manage Solutions" dialog, the message "There was an error getting shared solutions from the server" appears in the "Shared Solutions" box.
The "SSL connect error: Error contacting server" dialog also appears when attempting to download a recipe.
The status icon in the "Notifications" bar is red. Hovering over the icon displays the message "You may not be currently connected to the foldit servers. Click to recheck". Clicking the icon has no effect.
(As noted in #Veteran, the ergonomics of the connected icon are not good. The colors used are extremely hard for the red-green color weak to distinguish. Ideally, the icon should change shape in addition to changing color. Otherwise, go with blue for OK and yellow for doubtful.)
Oddly chat is still active.
I've been starting new clients without any issues. Very odd indeed.
People are still having problems with this
I have two clients, both devprev, but different release dates. The older release is getting the SSL error.
The older client, updated 4/24, with binary version 9aa3a07a30ced454aa4840a45610c31a and resources version d5ab8c661a94b72c951b6b557e5bb8a2, gets the SSL error when trying to connect.
The newer client, updated 4/27, with binary version 2bfe2e07977035159ee66e7f30d9175d and resources version 91373e2e6560ddccd3827577bf0e0080, connects successfully.
An updated Windows client has been posted to the site. The latest update had a fix for the SSL error but clients were failing to update due to the new SSL certificate.
No change yet. I closed a client and am unable to open new clients.
If you are still experiencing the SSL error, you will need to download and install a new client. The auto-update fails due to the SSL error.
Thank aaronw3. For those who are not aware and who have recipes loaded into their Cookbook:
Your cookbook file is "all.macro" in your foldit program.
When uninstalling or reinstalling the foldit application, all you need to do is copy that file first to another folder, then paste into the new installation of the foldit app.
See also the BSS cure below. You can always install to a new directory (folder) and then just copy over the bits you actually need. This preserves your all.macro, game history, etc.
(Windows world, dunno about Linux and Mac.)
For those with a taste for brain salad surgery, there's a workaround if you have a working 4/27 client.
Copy the following directories and files from your functioning client to the failing client:
directories:
cmp-binary-2bfe2e07977035159ee66e7f30d9175d
cmp-resources-91373e2e6560ddccd3827577bf0e0080
files:
version-binary.txt
version-resources.txt
This solution worked for me on Windows when the failing client was not running. Next test will be to see if I can update a still-running but disconnected client, then start a second client in the same directory to "rescue" the current solution.
The above solution also worked for a running client, no problems. I believe the running client will most likely continue using the old directories, while any new clients will pick up the new directories.
Sadly, I ended up just shutting down the working client anyway, since I'd dropped 4 ranks since the client went disconnected.
loci,
thanks for the fix. it worked except for updating group scores(which may happen once client/foldit link up correctly).
On real old clients this fails because an old version of the database directory will be deleted without getting a new one.
So just to be sure copy also the directory with database in its name.
Not to pile on, but one more little thing I noticed.
While the little icon was red*, I tried to share a new recipe. Somewhat surprisingly, it seemed to work, and the "Congratulations" message was displayed. The "Web" button was greyed out in the edit dialog, however. A check of fold.it showed the recipe had not made.
After applying the BSS fix above, I shared again, was again congratulated, and this time the recipe was visible.
* or whatever color that is....
Can we get an idea how long it will be till we get a fix rather than having to use the reinstallation getaround?
If actually everyone who is having problems needs to reinstall the software then it needs a statement to that effect and instructions on the website front page / blog.
Are puzzles going to be extended?
I have been waiting for a solution and have therefore lost at least 24hrs playing time.
Sorry about this mimi, but indeed that is the only solution.
We have posted instructions on the front page and extended 2 puzzles already:

We will extend 880, but will not be able to extend the Ebola puzzle as we're on a tight schedule to get your designs in for testing (hopefully that is understandable!).
Again, our apologies for all of this... we should be good for the next 2 years:

You don't need to wipe out existing clients by reinstalling over them. Install to a different directory / folder and copy over two directories and two files. Worked for me on Windows, not sure about the other platforms.
I downloaded from the web site and installed over my current folders. Nothing lost or overwritten that I can tell (four different computers, all Windows). However, I did copy my options.txt and all.macro files to the desktop just in case.
I lost all my recipes doing the brain surgery...copying the resources and the two version files. When I launched foldit, it wiped out or otherwise ignored all my recipes.
Hopefully I have all my important work saved offline. Don't know what I've lost though.
Be sure to back up your all.macro, even though you aren't explicitly removing it.
I finally fixed all of my clients since a number of older ones didn't work. I found that I had to switch out three cmp files and all three of the version files.
Fixed already
