In Lua 2, bands can be made to any atom, not just the backbone, so banding to adjacent segments can now do real work. Also, what if the adjacent segment is a free floating ligand?
Banding is also being used as a substitute for a function to measure the distance between atoms. This can give useful information on the sidechain conformation or backbone twist. See the discussion in http://fold.it/portal/node/991316 .
