XP crashing regularly: twisting sidechains

Case number:845829-986913
Topic:Crash/Hang
Opened by:m4rty
Status:Closed
Type:Bug
Opened on:Sunday, October 18, 2009 - 16:34
Last modified:Wednesday, June 1, 2011 - 16:28

Access violation occurs when manipulating sidechains.

Particularly reproducible when using "shake" tool (as pictured), but it also occurs randomly during manual twisting of sidechains.

This crash makes the game _unplayable_.

this is on XPSP3, fully updated

I had this sometime before on my own and my girfriend´s old PC, on my sisters´ newer PCs this didn´t happen.
I noticed, that my and her board/graphics-drivers (even XP itself) were damaged, I reinstalled XP, getting the latest board and graphics drivers.
Maybe you needn´t do this much.

How much RAM do you have, and are there some applications running in the background?
Which graphics card do you use and which driver?

regards,
Alex

I´ve had a look at the screenshots.
In general, an access violation occurs when two parts of software (or hardware) try to access the same RAM area at the same time, or in other words, some applications have an agrument about the same ressource.
This could be because of low RAM, damaged RAM, or not 100% set-up-hardware, or old driver-fragements in the registry, which block ressources for the latest drivers.

This is also known as a segfault. It's due to a bad pointer dereference. It is not due to low RAM.

A thread tried to access a virtual memory address that it didn't have access to.

Old driver fragments in the registry? Blocking resources? I have a masters in computer engineering... I humbly submit that that answer sounds far-fetched...

Sorry I can't help more. It would really be much easier to debug this if the source was open.

Sorry, I didn´t know that you have masters in computer-engineering, so this must have bored you.
I don´t have Visual Studio installed, so XP didn´t give me these details for the crash.

What I wanted to say, that with similar "symptoms", on my system a reinstall (and taking just the ATI display driver without catalyst anymore) worked, and the game doesn´t crash anymore.

I'm using an nvidia card... Quadro NVS 120M (512MB video RAM)

I've never had a problem before... all other Direct3D and OpenGL
apps seem to be fine.

All signs seem to point to foldit.exe as the culprit, and not a problematic driver.
...that is, unless you can show me a stack trace that convinces me otherwise.
