It would be very nice to implement an "ignore" option for chat to filter out the blah-blah-blah noise generated by a few players who think they have to natter on constantly about nothingness.

As it is not possible, this is my reply on http://fold.it/portal/comment/reply/986755 , please copy it after solving the problem:

its way better to include another global "chat" chat.

I don't know what Brick sees as not-nothingness, since I don't remember I ever have read him in the chat, but that would give the "a chat is for chatting" half a place and leave the "a chat is for announcing" half their empty chat.

Yes, it's a bit ironicaly written, but I mean it.

Most of my comments in global chat consist of telling the main offender to shut up. I'm surprised flood-control doesn't kick in.

If people don't have anything useful and game related to say, they should follow suit.

Chat should be for things like helping newbies, giving assistance "how do I center the protein after it disappears off the screen". help with new features, and communicating with the admin/dev team if they are there. It should be for game related talk. Groups can use their group chat to keep the intra-team blather off the main chat.

As it is now, Global chat is an endless stream of crap, most of it having nothing to do with the game, totally overwhelming any valid content. Maybe they need to have their an AOL chat-room, it's about the right level of audience over there, and it will keep it off the game chat.

This is what happened when I referred a friend to Foldit:

"I thought you said Foldit was for Real Science, but the chat window was filled with Fake Science Crap"

Example 1 Sep 13 04:36:00

[Aotearoa] what controls the energy levels of the protein while its folding
[Aotearoa] from a starting energy level, it must go through a varying range of energy levels, where are those limits, what are they and how does it work with the rest fot he energy stuff going on from other proteins folding
[Aotearoa] is there an energy connection between everything, and in turn,m it has its "day"
[Aotearoa] string theory, binding all these things from their birth to their... um, transfer to another dimension or level?!
[Drauka] Protein folding has next to nothing to do with string theory what are you going on about!

Example 2 Jun 15 01:05:39

[Aotearoa] doesnt mean the energy is not there to support such a design, or another design is present we are not able to "touch" with our limited senses
[Aotearoa] thus the energy is in some way or manner, being translated by the protein
[Aotearoa] and what cycle is has with relationship to space / earth - is present, but not able to express itself. yes, im making my own theory up as i fold to keep me in High Spirits
[pletsch] I have heard some really bizarre, strange and unbelievable theories on the subject

bro, Who do you/he think you/he is/are? Einstein?

no wait... even his accepted "real science" theories are now questionable due to the continued research in the field... so are you saying my "questions" about science are not real? they are questions, NOT FACTUAL STATEMENTS... so here you are throwing your toys out of your cot, leaving our team Richard Dawkins Foundation Team and joining AHAP Team because I ask questions to learn more about science from a few of those here who have a passion for science ?

Get over yourself. <--- factual statement.

Yes, we should have an "ignore" function for chat, so we don't have to be bothered with rants and other diatribe.

But I disagree on having chat for solely functional/game purposes. One of the reasons why I've stayed here is the camaraderie that happens in spite of cultural or age or background or skill or time zone differences.

Maybe the addition of another chat window solely for "social", and renaming "global" as "technical"? Although three is hard to juggle; my screen is only so big. Four might be harder to handle.

Manipulation of Fold.it players, team ranks/scores and administration by having multiple usernames, to enhance the voting outcome is not new to "Angus aka Brick from Free DC Team" wasting time on mind games rather than Finding the solution to folding proteins for Science.

which brings me to this part where I have never seen brick help anyone but himself in global chat anyway!
Even when he was in my team he wouldnt share his work, nor work together with the other team mates to acheive a better result.

So What do you actually use chat for anyway brick? keeping an eye on your puppets? pffft. shame on you bro.

In many cases, an ignore feature will not be sufficient.

We clearly need more effective chat moderation.

For example, the topic of sodomy is inappropriate for Foldit chat, particularly when used as a personal attack.

Example 1 Jun 17 19:09:04

[Aotearoa] hill billys vs city folk
[Aotearoa] ya what, ya locks ya doors around here, haw haw haw
[Aotearoa] squeal piggy squeal
[Aotearoa] deliverence
[Aotearoa] pulp f

Example 2 Aug 29 21:07:58

[Aotearoa] i bet you i hog tied more people than you.
[Aotearoa] squeal bricky squeal. deliverence

The continuous abuse of global chat should not be tolerated, and any such abuse should trigger a kick/ban from chat, in some cases permanently.

This highly-voted suggestion has sunk to the second page without any comment from the project.

Can we get an Ignore feature on chat to set an ignore for specific users?

can we get a "social" chat channel apart from the "global" (game support) channel, and have the "global" channel strongly moderated to keep it on topic? At least then we can ignore the whole "social" channel using the game's chat controls.

We're now working on implementing this feature. The plan is to add a chat command '/ignore username', as well as '/unignore username', which will have effect across all channels and persistent on game restart.

As the game-chat is performed with IRC, you can use an external chat client (Pidgin for example), to use the game's #global or other chat-rooms and create a private chat.

So, if you have to tell another player very much and you open a private window, your messages won't appear on the game's window.
Plus, you can easily grab links and copy an pest content of the chat.
