Howdy, y'all.

With the last upgrade (which included recipes), my display has gone screwy. All sidechains appear black, with light grey / white stripes.

Because I'm red-green colorblind, I play in "colorblind" mode. But even when the display is set to use the default colors, the sidechains are all colored the same... and are striped. See the attached .jpg for details.

This is really hurting my play; because now I can't tell what's hydrophobic and what's not.

but everything is still normal.
Have you tried changing views?

It doesn't matter how I view the puzzles: every view shows the sidechains colored incorrectly. I changed nothing to cause this. The problem happened when the newest update was loaded into my system.

FYI: I re-installed Foldit; and I still have the same problem.

That's so odd.. what video card are you using?
and what OS ?

And sorry couldn't resist:

P,

I don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about. I'm just a dumb ol' Texas redneck. :-)

There's a sticker on my machine that says "Graphics by ATI - Radeon Xpress 200". Is that helpful? And I am running Windows XP... if "OS" means "operating system".

I can't state this enough times: everything was well until the last update. Nothing changed on my computer. There is something wrong with the last update. I started over from scratch with a new re-load of Foldit, and I still have this same problem.

Additionally, every time I try to upload or download a group solution, Foldit crashes. But that's the subject of another bug report.

As long as you have not added your own video card, then yes the info is helpful. I would start with trying to make sure you have the latest and greatest video driver from ATI's website. You can find it here:

I went to that site. It told me I had to upload some other Windows program I have never heard of, before I could even consider getting the newest video driver. Since I really don't know what I'm doing, I am not taking the risk of screwing up my machine. I'd sooner go play another game.

Can someone who runs this site please address this bug?

If not, could someone please tell me how to re-load the last version of Foldit, the one just before the introduction of recipes? And can someone please tell me how to NOT accept further updates?

Hmm, I'm not sure if it's possible to revert, and it might cause "bad" things to happen.

Do you know what it asked you to update? Was it Direct X ? If so that's the way windows talks to your hardware, and should be updated to get the best performance.

It is being addressed by someone, but the soonest your issue would be fixed would be the next update, so I wouldn't hold out for anything sooner than a week. However, you will get an email when the issue is resolved, so you will know when you can play again.

Hi Boots, have you tried reinstalling the game and updating your display drivers?

You can update your drivers by googling for 'nvidia drivers' or 'amd drivers'. I can't post the links directly here due to the spam filter.

Regardless, more importantly, try reinstalling the game and tell me if the problem still persists?

On a secondary note, has anyone else experienced the problems that BootsMcGraw faced?

If so, please do post here or tell the mods. Thanks!!

Maybe disabling hardware acceleration (instructions in the FAQ) might help?

Thanks to all for their advice and words of wisdom.

Re-installing the game did not help. And I am not enough a computer geek to toy with hardware and software of which I know little or nothing.

Tweaking my hardware accelerator seemed to work, although it's messed up the graphics on most of my other programs. It's annoying to have to re-set the accelerator, daily, but a small price to pay to continue playing this game that I enjoy so much.

With the new release you can also turn off outlines. Is this still a problem for you?

I got disgusted with how my doorstop of a computer wasn't performing for Foldit, or anything else; so in June, I bought a brand new computer. Quad core (whatever that means...Pletsch said that is a good thing), with something like 4 gigabytes of memory (eight times what the previous machine had); so I have no problems with graphics or any other aspect of Foldit.

I think the complexity of the game is growing faster than many people's machines can keep up with. Hopefully, the ability to tone down the graphics will allow those with older machines to play the game without slowdowns, glitches, or crashes.

I wouldn't be quite so sure--Over the past two months only an older computer was available for my use. After attempting the first design puzzle, I was so frustrated about the gamespeed, even under the lowest settings, that I didn't bother again.

But that's all changed now that I have my beautiful, shiny, good, fast computer back! ^_^
