We can all agree on how deeply useful the restore best function is, automatically ratcheting us towards high scores as we fiddle around. However, sometimes to go further, we have to do some drastic rearranging of the protein and start working our way back up from a lower score. This keeps us from using the incredibly useful auto saves of our best results until we get above where we were before. I'd like to propose adding a 'new best' function, to reset the best score to current, and allow us to work up from a new shape on a puzzle we'd worked on before. You could always save your previous best first and reload it if you give up on the new approach.
Bob, you've misunderstood the intent of the first post. He wants to be able to temporarily detach your actual best save file from the "Restore Best" function, because he's decided to radically redesign his structure, and the "Best" button just puts him back on the old path.
I agree with the change request and would like to suggest the following modification. You should be able to designate any of your save files for this puzzle as the "best" one, so you can begin on a new plan for a puzzle and easily recover from setbacks on this new path without accidentally restoring your best from some previous attempt.
This would save a lot of time spent carefully Undo-ing a setback on a new design.
We now have New Best, and also quick-saves which address Brian's suggestion.

Try using the reset puzzle button... It still saves your best score and you can still restore it but it gives you a chance at making it better as well.
