Hello,

Today I stumbled upon your really amazing product.

After Just launching the game, I went to chat with the people playing. I noticed the chat mod Trigger was publicly posting people's IP into the chat, when anyone insulted him. Not only that, I just wanted to confirm if he really was a mod,I asked if he was and he kicked me from the chat.

I do not know if this is common practice, but Having this only installed for 15 minutes before seeing the unjust, unprofessional and downright unacceptable behavior of the moderators or devs, I am unable to use this.

If you keep chat logs, check triggers around 5:10 - 5:35 PM PST 11/23/2014

This idiot was the one acting "unprofessionally and unacceptably". Banned at chat mod's discretion.

Feedback closed.

Hi there,
Please accept our apologies for the situation in question and the inadvertent release of the IP information. I'm sure the chat mod realized that was a mistake the second it was done, and that we're all human and make mistakes.

Furthermore, I'd also like to apologize for the message above. No one here's an idiot.

It was a bad situation, and it got a little out of hand on all sides, and steps have been taken to ensure situations like this do not happen in the future from our volunteer moderators. While I do agree that a temporary kick was necessary in the situation, it was handled badly.

If anyone in the future has an issue with our moderators, please feel free to send me a message directly.

In the meantime, let's all take a breath, remind ourselves the Community Guidelines exist for a reason, and do a bit better.

Best regards,
inkycatz

Excuse me inkycatz, that's completely unacceptable. The only reason that you are even responding is due to the original posters reddit post which has reached the top 10 of /r/all and looks to shine this admittedly fantastic concept in a very negative light.

What needs to happen is that the two moderators (same person?) who posted both the initial comment on this thread and who was Doxxing people in the Foldit chat need to be removed from their positions as moderators and a very careful introspection of your moderator recruitment process needs to be undertaken.

All your comment says is 'they messed up, but lets leave it'. How about, lets not leave it and lets actually face it head on. The fact that the chat moderator posted multiple IP addresses suggests to me that he was not sorry 'the minute' he did it, and he will do it again.

Having read BootsMcGraw's profile I can see that he is infact the Chat Moderator in question - do you really, REALLY, think it's acceptable to post users personal network information? You're an educated adult man, and you act like a child. Shame on you sir.

This is completely and utterly shameful. The fact that this moderator was posting multiple peoples personal information online and is then going to receive no punishment is just morally wrong.

It is becoming fairly obvious to me that this isn't just about a game to help the world but it is about helping your friends throw around power on the internet. Pathetic.

Hello,

Thanks for the response, Mr inkycatz. It is very much appreciated, at least by myself, and I hope this matter is resolved in such a way as to prohibit future issues. Both RolfJonson and I belong to a large online community which was introduced to your game today as being an amazing tool which has furthered genetic research years further than it would have been without online collaboration. As such, we hold yourselves (as well as the researchers) and the research obtained by this game in our highest regards.

Unfortunately, while a subsection of our community was very eager to play said game, many of us were introduced to the game via the issue in question and this generated a large negative reaction. If there is one thing we cannot take well, it is abuse of power, especially relating to a simple video game. As a community, we value integrity and professionalism, and part of that involves knowing how to handle unruly players appropriately.

While we hope that the hype from this community will further aid in your research, we would like to remind you that, in the most literal sense, the number of eyes on this project has increased significantly, and that means we are going to continually follow the amazing research put out that was made possible by this game, as well as the actions taken by the people who work and speak on behalf of such an awesome endeavor.

Please see both threads from the site here. I take no ownership of either this site nor these posts:

Original "Today I learned" thread (please add reddit.com) to the beginning of each to create the URL:

Complaint thread:

If you wish to speak about your project, please contact the mods of the particular subreddit you wish to speak in, and they will set you up. I hold no authority and I do not speak on behalf of the community, the site, or the owners of either.

Thank you.

Also, the moderator in question is being removed, and all the remaining volunteer moderators have been reminded of our policies and my feelings on the matter. I thought it was pretty clear from my initial message, but followup feedback has indicated, hey, I probably could have worded that better.

We want Foldit to be a place of good science and trust, and apologize for the damage that has been done to your trust as players as a result of this incident.

As always, my message box is open to your feedback and concerns.

This Boots Mcgraw guy (direct personal attack removed by inkycatz, please review the community guidelines: https://fold.it/portal/communityrules) is he a moderator? Pretty unprofessional.

"steps have been taken to ensure situations like this do not happen in the future "

- What steps? You got a hundred thousand people thinking you're a bunch of immature brats.

Putting this person on the job and then not supervising them is gross negligence which has already led to compromises of privacy.

Don't use legal terms if you don't know what they mean. There is no way the duty of care was this explicit enough that his standard of care violated it. And there is no way it passes a proximate cause or even a cause in fact reasoning. Seriously, you come off as an idiot when you just say things. do you even know the base test for negligence, let alone gross negligence?
