Is there an idiot's guide to getting started with Linux hiding around here? I'm not even getting error messages I'm getting a whole lotta nothing; as I'm fighting off a head-cold and am really in my heart of hearts just an "end-user" I'd love a check list to make sure I haven't done something daft.

are you in a 64 bit OS, or 32 bit which OS & kernel release?

if you are in 64 bit, make sure you have ia32libs installed,
and in order to connect you may need lib32nss-mdns.

you can find both of these in your package manager by name.

If you still need further help, please post here.

This is a really good idea. I'm trying to write a short guide to installation for the Linux OS. I hope that will help.

Thanks for the comment.

My teammate just tested this without any problems.

1. Download Foldit.tar.gz
2. Unpack it by right clicking on the achieve and choose "extract here" or
type "tar -zxvf Foldit.tar.gz" in terminal
3. Enter into the Foldit directory and type "./Foldit" in terminal
4. Enjoy the game and contribute to humanity.

Apparently, that's all there is to it.
If the problem continues, please let us know. We'll try to get them fixed.

Thanks.... the head cold had apparently seriously damaged my limited knowledge of bash... it's not a kind system to dyslexics. *chuckles* Everything seems to be working now. Yeay!

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit on my desktop, and when I try to run the application nothing happens. I have the same OS installed on my laptop, and I am able to run it on there just fine.

I already have lib32nss-mdns installed, but I cannot find ia32libs. Was the latter replaced by another package?
